“Mom?” my son Matthew asked me anxiously, “what does it mean that it’s Autism Awareness Month?”
Um, Um…
“It means that people need to be aware, I means to they need to raise
money for—it’s so people can learn what a great guy you are.”
I know. Could have been more succinct, but it’s a hard question to
answer. Wouldn’t it be more meaningful to Matthew, his family and friends, if April were Autism Acceptance Month instead, as autism self-advocate Paula Durbin-Westby suggests?
