Add Meaning, Acceptance to Autism Month

From one of our favorite autism bloggers Laura Shumaker at SFGate.com.

“Mom?” my son Matthew asked me anxiously, “what does it mean that it’s Autism Awareness Month?”
Um, Um…
“It means that people need to be aware, I means to they need to raise money for—it’s so people can learn what a great guy you are.”
I know. Could have been more succinct, but it’s a hard question to answer. Wouldn’t it be more meaningful to Matthew, his family and friends, if April were Autism Acceptance Month instead, as autism self-advocate Paula Durbin-Westby suggests?
