Lives Too Fragile to Move?

LACKAWANNA, N.Y. -- A facility on Ridge Road in Lackawanna is the only home that Jennifer Weintraub has ever known.
Cyndy Wisniewski visits son Raymond,
21, at Baker Victory Services
intermediate care facility
Weintraub, who suffered brain damage when she was born 37 years ago, gets fed through a tube and regularly has fluid cleared from her lungs. She lives with 16 other severely disabled residents who receive round-the-clock medical care.
Baker Victory Services, a nonprofit Catholic human services agency formerly run by Father Nelson H. Baker, has operated the residence since the 1950s.
But now the agency plans to close the facility, and parents such as Barry Weintraub wonder if their medically frail children will survive being relocated.
