Opinion: Everyone Deserves a Place to Call Home

Opinion piece by Gail Levinson, executive director of Supportive Housing Association of New Jersey.

TRENTON, N.J. -- Overcoming our history of segregating people with special needs has proved a challenge for society, yet government and provider agencies, professionals and families continue to demand better. The timing of this new advocacy is right, given the state’s decision to close two developmental centers within the next five years.
Approximately 88,000 people in New Jersey live with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Currently, there are 2,376 individuals living in state developmental centers, and 8,144 people with developmental disabilities living in community group homes, supervised apartments and supportive housing.
